1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions below:
Tagore says, “Education is a piece of diamond and culture is the emission of light therefrom." So, a well educated man must be cultured too. People should be cultured in appropriate sense and culture should be moulded with dice of our own tradition. The term 'culture' is very broad. It comprises music, literature, drama and other aspects of ( fine arts. The true picture of a country is projected in its culture. In the arena of culture indigenous culture plays a very vital role. In the creation and propagation of culture patronization also plays a vital role.
Since the dawn of civilization culture has a glorious and magnificent history in the realm of life-style and thought. Culture reflects the way of living, eating, talking and learning for enriching people's creative endeavour towards handicraft, music, dancing, folk-songs and skills of making various types of musical instruments.
Bangladesh has a distinct culture and tradition. This culture and tradition is rooted in its soil. Its land and people are interdependent. Our culture echoes the religious belief that we have inherited from our ancestors. The Liberation War in 1971 and the Language Movement in 1952 are the glorious bright sides of our cultural history. As a nation though we are poor economically, its facet has the lustre of a meaningful struggle for survival on earth.
বঙ্গানুবাদ: রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর বলেছেন, "শিক্ষা হলো এক টুকরা হীরা এবং সংস্কৃতি হলো এর থেকে বিচ্ছুরিত আলো।" তাই একজন সুশিক্ষিত মানুষকে সংস্কৃতিবান হওয়া উচিত। জনগণকে যথাযথ ধারণায় সংস্কৃতিবান হতে হবে এবং আমাদের নিজস্ব ঐতিহ্যের ছাঁচে গড়া সংস্কৃতি হওয়া উচিত। 'সংস্কৃতি' শব্দটা বিশাল। এটি সঙ্গীত, সাহিত্য, নাটক এবং চারুকলার অন্যান্য দিক নিয়ে গঠিত। একটি দেশের প্রকৃত চিত্র তার সংস্কৃতিতেই অঙ্কিত হয়। সংস্কৃতির কর্মক্ষেত্রে দেশীয় সংস্কৃতি খুব বড় ভূমিকা পালন করে। সংস্কৃতি সৃষ্টি ও বিস্তারে পৃষ্ঠপোষকতায় গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করে।
সভ্যতার শুরু থেকে জীবনযাত্রা ও চিন্তার জগতে সংস্কৃতির একটি গৌরবান্বিত ও মহৎ ইতিহাস রয়েছে। সংস্কৃতি মানুষের জীবনযাত্রার, খাওয়ার, কথা বলার এবং শিক্ষার প্রতিফলন করে কুটির শিল্প,
সঙ্গীত, নৃত্য, লোকসঙ্গীত এবং বিভিন্ন রকমের বাদ্যযন্ত্র তৈরির দক্ষতার প্রতি মানুষের সৃষ্টিশীল উৎসাহ সমৃদ্ধ করে।
বাংলাদেশের স্বতন্ত্র সংস্কৃতি ও ঐতিহ্য আছে। এই সংস্কৃতি ও ঐতিহ্য এই মাটিতেই দৃঢ়ভাবে প্রতিষ্ঠিত। এর ভূমি ও জনগণ পরস্পর পরস্পরের উপর নির্ভরশীল। আমাদের সংস্কৃতি আমাদের ধর্মীয় বিশ্বাস প্রতিফলিত করে যা আমরা আমাদের পূর্বপুরুষের নিকট থেকে উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে পেয়েছি। ১৯৭১ সালের মুক্তিযুদ্ধ ও ১৯৫২ সালের ভাষা আন্দোলন আমাদের সংস্কৃতির ইতিহাসের গৌরবান্বিত আলোকিত দিক। যদিও অর্থনৈতিকভাবে জাতি হিসেবে আমরা দরিদ্র, এর একটি দিকের অর্থপূর্ণ লড়াইয়ের মাধ্যমে বেঁচে থাকার গৌরব আছে।
(a) Answer the questions below : -
(i) What does culture comprise of?
Ans : The term 'culture' is very broad. According to the passage, it comprises music, literature, drama, and other aspects of fine arts. It is seen as the "emission of light" from the diamond of education.
(ii) What aspects of life does culture reflect?
Ans : Culture reflects the overall way of living. Specifically, it reflects:
- Daily habits: Eating, talking, and learning.
- Creative endeavors: Handicraft, music, and dancing.
- Skills: Folk-songs and the art of making various musical instruments.
- Thought: The internal realm of life-style and intellectual thought.
(iii) In what sense the culture of Bangladesh distinct?
Ans : The culture of Bangladesh is distinct because it is deeply rooted in its soil and shaped by the interdependence between the land and its people. Its uniqueness comes from:
- Inherited Beliefs: Religious beliefs passed down from ancestors.
- Historical Struggles: The glorious history of the Language Movement in 1952 and the Liberation War in 1971.
- Resilience: Even amidst economic poverty, the culture shines with the "lustre" of a meaningful struggle for survival.
(iv) Write down the main idea and the supporting ideas of the above passage.
Ans : Main Idea: The passage defines culture as the essential reflection of education and heritage, specifically highlighting the rich, resilient, and struggle-rooted nature of Bangladeshi culture.
Supporting Ideas:
- The Link between Education and Culture: Education is incomplete without culture; a well-educated person must also be cultured.
- Components of Culture: Culture is a broad term involving fine arts (music, drama, literature) and everyday lifestyle choices.
- Role of Tradition and Patronage: For culture to be created and propagated, it needs to be molded by tradition and supported by patronage.
- Identity of Bangladesh: Bangladesh’s identity is uniquely tied to its history of struggle (1952 and 1971) and its deep connection to the land and ancestral beliefs.

- New Word: Invisible (Prefix: in-) — অদৃশ্য
- Sentence: Some gases are invisible to the naked eye. (কিছু গ্যাস খালি চোখে দেখা যায় না বা অদৃশ্য থাকে।)
6. Frame Wh-questions from the following sentences:

(Note: Similar to the previous one, did is used for the past tense "bought", and the verb changes to "buy".)
(d) How is he?
(Note: Here "How" asks about his qualities or character. Alternatively, if you want to ask what kind of person he is, you could say: What kind of person is he?)
7. Re-arrange the following words to make sentences :

9. Translate the following passage into English:
সৎ মানুষকে সবাই শ্রদ্ধা করে। আমাদের সৎ জীবনযাপন করা উচিত। সততা মানুষকে শক্তি দেয়। যে মানুষ সৎ নয় সে দেশের শত্রু।
